Sugar and Spice, Mendon, VT

Kari has been badgering me to eat here since we got to Vermont in June.  I was holding out for a big family trip, but we had to be at this end of Rutland to return a rental car (don't ask what happened to the regular car) so we stopped in for a bite and some shopping.

If you haven't been here, it's a giant Vermont gift store and restaurant all rolled into one.  They make their own Maple Syrup which is delicious.

I went with a traditional 2 egg breakfast with over-medium eggs.  I think you can tell a lot about a restaurant by how they make over medium eggs.  There's really no excuse not to be able to make them perfect when you do it hundreds of times a day.  I always assume that if the OM eggs are marginal, they just don't care.  The good news is that these were perfect.  no runny white yukkiness (made up word of the day) and plenty of good gooey yolk.  I had Corned Beef Hash and Home Fries.  The hash was just slightly overdone, but still very good and the home fries were great.  Overall I gave the meal a 4.5.

Kari had Pumpkin Pancakes which were excellent with tons of real pumpkin pulp in them for a huge, slap yo face, pumpkin flavor.  The bacon was just perfect for her, crispy and delicious.  She gave it a 4.

The service was a bit slow and the waitress really didn't smile much, but the food made up for it.

I'm going to take a little time to air a few pet peeves, but I want to add that they are minor things that in no way detracted significantly from an otherwise excellent experience.  They just happened to happen here so I want to talk about them.

First:  Staff talking in front of customers.  I know you're here all day and can't be silent automatons, but when you're bussing tables in front of the customers, don't bitch and complain about your fellow bus-persons.

Second:  If you have a sign in the bathroom telling people to hold the toilet handle down until the toilet flushes completely, you need to replace the toilet innards.  It's cheap and easy.  The sign looked like it had been there for a while and was pretty ratty - if you're not going to fix the toilet, at least put a professional looking sign up.

Again, we had a great experience and recommend that you visit here.  I just have to say some things sometimes.
